Weaving from newspaper tubes for beginners: step-by-step master classes

Weaving from a rod is a rather ancient craft, with the help of which various household items were made. It is difficult to get a real vine in big modern cities, because many needlewomen switched to weaving from newspaper tubes, which, with proper skills, proper twisting, dyeing, are outwardly indistinguishable from the natural vine. With the help of such an affordable, cheap material, various decorations for the interior are made, including festive, decorative kitchen containers, children's toys and souvenirs.

History of weaving

In working with newspaper tubes, the same methods are used as when weaving straw from a rod. People engaged in weaving even before they learned to work wood and metals. Baskets for fishing, simple pieces of furniture from an ancient dwelling, fencing for small domestic animals were made of such material. In Russia, baskets were often woven around for picking up mushrooms, berries, huge boxes, baby cradles, bread boxes and sandals. Birch bark was also used.

The first weave of paper came up in eastern countries: China, India, Korea, when the paper has ceased to be too expensive, and the vine - inaccessible to the urban dweller. In Europe, the countries of the former Soviet Union, such a hobby has become popular quite recently, but it has already won the hearts of many fans of hand-made. The main advantage of such handicrafts is that even a child’s weaves out of paper tubes - they are more pliable than wicker and not as fragile as straws.

Newspaper Preparation

Material for weaving should first be prepared, you will need:

  • newspaper or magazine sheets;
  • glue stick or PVA;
  • knitting needle;
  • scissors or office knife;
  • acrylic paints or spray paint;
  • rubber or cloth gloves;
  • clear acrylic lacquer in a can;
  • corrugated or plain.

How to twist the straws

What you need to do to get "paper vine":

  • newsprint is cut into strips six to nine centimeters wide. - the newspaper is folded "accordion", cut into folds;
  • then the sheet is tightly screwed onto the needle diagonally, starting from the corner;
  • when the strip is over, the corner needs to be greased and fixed;
  • one tip of the resulting tube will always be slightly thicker than the other, which allows you to increase the length to infinity by inserting the tube into the tube. If done correctly, the mount comes out very strong, and the seam is completely invisible.

Add colors

Newspaper tubes can be painted in any color scheme, but the most popular option is a color that imitates a real vine. To make a box, a box, a basket or a toy made of paper seem “real”, the material for it is painted with alcohol or water stain. There are many shades of wood stain - dark and light walnut, stained and bleached oak, as well as rosewood, teak, pine, mahogany, larch, chestnut, cherry, alder, ebony.

In order to get a uniform color, the color is produced very quickly - by brush, sponge, spray or by immersion in a container with a dye. Suitable colors are chosen empirically - different paper requires different staining times. Dry the tubes vertically by inserting it into a jar or glass, spreading it out on a fine grid. After drying, the color changes slightly - if it is too pale, paint the details again.

You can paint newspaper tubes with anything - green paint, iodine, hair dye, gouache, food dyes, acrylics. To make the color bright, uniform, and the newspaper text was not noticeable, the tubes are painted in white or gray, and later in any suitable color scheme.

If the stain is too dark, it is diluted with water, and when the product is planned to be made completely the same color, without contrasting inserts, it is easier to paint the finished structure immediately.

Weaving techniques

There are many techniques of weaving of paper rods:

  • simple - the work is done with one or two tubes, each element of the base or around one should be bent;
  • spiral torsion - the subject is carefully twisted around with two rods, slightly shifting in each subsequent row;
  • layered or fabric - repeats the structure of the fabric, the best way to create products of a round shape, the frame bends around the front, then back;
  • spiral - made around frame rods, the first row is made at an angle of 45 degrees, the empty space at the bottom is filled later;
  • rope and "pigtail" - help to significantly strengthen the base, to decorate the finished product in the area of the bottom or upper edge;
  • openwork - the most difficult, here are combined various options - "chess", braids, arcs, plaits, etc.

  • in order for the future candy bowl to have an even shape, they twist some capacity - a jar, a box, a pan, it is also important to keep equal distances between the twigs;
  • when the desired height - three to five cm. has been reached, the workers rods are cut or bent to form laces, the main ones are flattened, hidden;
