Painting a decorative stone of plaster, concrete or cement allows you to get a great finish, beautiful and practical at the same time. The work related to staining cannot be called too complex, but there are certainly certain technological nuances. You will receive an updated interior at very low cost.

Painting Tips

In order for the painting work to be successful, it is necessary first to prepare the necessary materials. You will need:

  • Rubber sponge;
  • Sandpaper;
  • A piece of cotton cloth;
  • Paint sprayer;
  • Grinding file;
  • Degreasing solution;
  • Paint;
  • Set of brushes;
  • Impregnating suspension;
  • Compressor.

It is not allowed to use paint brushes (maklovits) and rollers when painting decorative stone. At the same time, the use of paintwork materials will greatly increase, and ugly drips will appear on the surface.

Finishing with colored decorative stone is often used in landscape design and in facade works, therefore, the choice of paint should be treated especially responsibly.

Painting provides for compliance with certain rules:

  • Stone before staining is dried for 24-48 hours;
  • The old lining is pre-polished so that the paint does not crumble;
  • Impregnations are used strictly in accordance with the instructions. It is also important to consider the compatibility of the impregnation with dyes;
  • To make the surface shine, you can use a varnish. However, it does not always look beautiful, since the effect of the naturalness of the material is lost.

If you follow these tips, the coating will look natural, and the paint will last a long time.

What to paint

For good decoration of handmade stone, you can use acid or acrylic paint. These dyes penetrate deep into the structure of the stone, dry quickly, and are resistant to fading. Before starting the painting, be sure to ensure that the composition is in working condition, does not have lumps and clots. If necessary, the paint is diluted with water and diluted with a primer. We give a brief description of the dyes:

  • Acrylic. This is a water-based mortar that is ideal for dyeing gypsum stone. It is elastic, resistant to external influences, does not crack with time.

  • Silicone and silicate. These dyes are mainly used for outdoor work. The binders in these formulations are silicone resins and water glass. The advantage of this coating, in addition to aesthetics, is a long working life. He is about 20 years old.

  • Copper and iron sulphate. These solutions are used as impregnation. They help to increase the resistance of staining. Iron sulfate gives the cladding a yellowish tint, copper - blue.

  • Stain For staining plaster and cement decorative materials used acid stain or composition for woodwork.

In addition, wet-effect impregnations are used for dyeing, as well as dyes that make the gypsum stone look like natural. Using varnishes allows you to get a matte or glossy surface with glitter. Varnish not only decorates, but also protects the surface from abrasion over time.

To lacquer coating turned out the most durable, it is applied in two or three layers. At the same time, the stone gets a slightly darker shade.

Brush or airbrush

What to use for painting - brush or airbrush? - such a question is asked by many novice masters. Both ways of doing work can be applied. The advantage of an airbrush is that it sprays paint. The result is a uniform and uniformly colored surface. Changing the distance from which the paint is applied, you can give the stone of plaster different shades. Airbrush is great for smooth transitions between shades and darkening bulging areas. It is advisable to use several sprayers with different colors. This will speed up the work and allow you to get an extraordinary beauty result.

On sale there are different types of airbrushes. Paint decorative stone can be the most budget airbrush - airbrush. It is important when buying to pay attention to the compressor. It depends on the quality of the application of the composition on the stone.

Using a brush causes the stone to stain unevenly. No matter how high-quality the brush is, the stains and divorces cannot be avoided anyway. But it is indispensable for applying varnish on torn areas of the cladding. You can slowly rush each stone, direct or, conversely, weaken halftones, decorate it with veins characteristic of natural stone. The technology is the simplest: dip the brush in the selected composition and paint.

The peculiarity of gypsum stone is that it absorbs dye unevenly. However, this should not be feared, since the lining turns out to be similar to natural stone.

Self staining: pros and cons

The main advantage of painting a decorative stone with your own hands is the ability to choose the material and shades so that the lined surface is in harmony with the home interior design. The painted surface can imitate stone, wood or brickwork. It is possible to use several shades, smoothly passing from one to another. There is only one drawback: the work is painstaking, requires responsibility, creativity and, of course, the desire to do something on their own. Otherwise, you risk to spoil everything.

Preparation of stone and paint for work

Before applying the dye surface must be carefully prepared:

  • They remove dust and dirt without moistening the surface too much;
  • If necessary, the surface is ground;
  • Decorative stone is treated with impregnation, and then dried.

A visual inspection of a decorative stone is required. There should be no flaws on it.

Painting a new stone is easier than repainting an old one, since there is no need for polishing. It is enough to wash the surface, process it 2-3 times with impregnation, and you can start work immediately.

The technology of applying paint on gypsum stone

There are several ways of applying the dye on the lining. You can paint a plaster decorative stone as before laying, and after it. To paint each stone individually, preferably for beginners. If you have any experience in this work, it is better to paint the already revetted wall. So you can more objectively evaluate the result. Tiles will look more natural and fit better into the interior. However, in this case it is necessary to take into account such moments:

  • Responsible approach and patience;
  • Preliminary staining plan;
  • Correct selection of color combinations;
  • Calculations of shadows and light.

It is advisable to paint the plaster decoration with two or three low-contrast colors. You should not be too zealous with a lot of shades, because gypsum absorbs dye unevenly. The same color can give several different ebbs.

Consider the most effective coloring options.

In bulk

This method is considered the best and easiest. In this case, the powder pigment is mixed directly into the gypsum, intended for the casting of stone decor. It turns out decorative stone, painted from the inside. In case of accidental damage, a white base will not appear. Convex parts of stones can be painted over with a regular brush. The coloring solution has such a composition.

  • Pigment - 0.5 tsp;
  • Water - 0.2 l;
  • Acrylic primer - 0.2 l.

After the stone hardens, it remains to get it out of shape, put it on a horizontal surface and apply a water-soluble varnish. There is a drawback to this method: the stone does not look quite natural, especially when viewed closely.

Surface method

This is a more time-consuming process, which, however, allows to achieve maximum similarity with natural wild stone. The coloring pigment (or several) is diluted in water, the brush is dipped into the solution and impregnated with stone. When adding from 30 to 50% acrylic primer, the coloring is stronger. After the "background" is prepared, the individual stones and patches are covered with a darker shade. Excessive care about the selection of the palette is not necessary, because every time the gypsum absorbs the dye in different ways. It is equally impossible to paint even plaster details of the same type.

The final stage of painting

After the surface treatment is complete, it remains to cover it with several layers of varnish. Sometimes the varnishing stage is missed, as many like the natural, matt look of the veneer, resembling natural stones. If acidic paint was used for the coating, the surface is washed and dried. Then it is covered with a hydrophobic composition.

Unusual staining

In addition to painting using conventional formulations, there are several non-standard options that will allow you to create your own magnificent "palace" interior decoration of a house or apartment.

Under the old marble

If you like the effect of aging of surfaces, you can make the artificial stone look like antique marble. The technology of coloring is as follows:

  • Acquired lining material is kept in a darkened room for 48 hours. If the artificial stone is made independently, it is pre-dried. The maximum allowable drying temperature is 55 degrees;
  • Heat the linseed oil. This work requires the utmost care, you need to do it in protective gloves;
  • Using a fleytsovy brush, the material is covered with linseed oil, preferably in 2 layers. It is necessary to ensure that the stone was processed evenly, without gaps;
  • It remains to wait a little time, and soon the plaster surface turns out to be streaked like ancient marble. It turns out a great finish for the kitchen or fireplace area.

Under the terracotta

The surface is treated under terracotta with rosin and shellac lacquer, which are dissolved in technical alcohol. The principle of applying the painting is the same as when painting under the marble. The effect of terracotta also manifests itself after a while.

Bronze cast

To obtain a bronze cast on the surface, materials are prepared and actions are performed in a certain order:

  • The linseed oil is applied to the surface so that the gypsum is well saturated with it;
  • The product is dried. As a rule, it takes 8-10 hours;
  • Bronze powder is mixed with varnish, then the product is processed in 2 layers;
  • The material is thoroughly dried;
  • Prepare the mixture: for 0.3 l of water - 0.1 l of acetic acid and 10 g of silver nitrate;
  • Apply to the surface of the thinnest layer of bronze powder, covered with a solution on top. When this occurs, the oxidation reaction;
  • The surface is rubbed with a piece of velvet.

To enhance the effect, wax dissolved in turpentine is applied to the surface of gypsum. This should be done until the material is saturated with the solution (the latter is no longer absorbed). Facing with such a coating can be washed, while it does not lose its properties.

Staining with the use of stain

Wood stain allows to receive very beautiful and unusual surfaces. You can apply it with the spray gun, but the best result is obtained by dipping the product into the solution. Heat the stain a little, put the gypsum stone into it for a couple of seconds, and then dry it. If necessary, the product is pre-wiped.

Conclusion

As you can see, the coloring of a decorative stone is not a very complicated matter, but it requires accuracy. If you follow the instructions for applying the coloring compositions, - you have a chance to do the job as “excellent” and get a result that will please you for a long time.
